Finding Great Light Around the Office Challenge
For this post-workshop challenge, I’d love for you to explore the office and scout spots that have interesting, flattering, or dramatic lighting. Think of it as a mini “location hunt,” but indoors.
1. Natural Light Hunt
Look for areas where window light creates beautiful portrait conditions. This could be:
- Soft side-light from a large window
- Directional light with nice shadows
- Backlighting that creates glow or rim-light
- Window reflections (bonus points!)
Take a photo of the spot — ideally with a subject, but without one is fine if nobody is available.
2. Artificial or Mixed Light Challenge
Find a location that uses:
- Office lamps
- Overhead lights
- Hallway lighting
- A mix of artificial + window light
Your mission: spot something that could make an interesting portrait because of the light.
Again, take a photo of the location, with or without a subject.
Below are example images from our workshop to help spark ideas. These were taken by the window in the Challenging Spirits meeting room. During our 30-minute session, the light shifted from bright and airy to noticeably dimmer, a perfect reminder of how quickly natural light can change. The brighter, diffused light created a soft, clean feel, while the dimmer light added a more dramatic mood to the portraits.
